Stepping with confident steps, the blue fox step down the dirt pathway that formed where he stepped, as the real path was far away. Instead, he treaded on the ground that he wanted to, off in a direction of intent. Playback didn't get much time outside of the palace in his heavy periods of work, but he had been personally needed to come out after the glitches. The glitches that caused horrible feelings to him, feelings of confusion and fear. But after a quick search, he had discovered the source. And he is off to power it down.
He had to do it himself, for it was for the best. Being one of the strongest in technological communications, and obviously being the victim as well, he was on a quick trip to the pinpointed location that he had discovered with track-backs to the glitches. He had done it as a "to make sure" check, wanting to clear out any chance that his glitches were caused from hostile intent. And, as it turned out, it was.
The foggy early morning air was cool, and the sun was not daring to peak out from the large looming clouds that covered the entire sky. But it was alright, for the fox needed no light. It was most likely just a device he had to shut down, and no more.
Getting closer, his nature went from speed to carefulness. He started looking around, making a careful eye for traps. For a device to have been created so that he was targeted, even if it was a general EMP device, his foe was not one of the simpler minds. Technology was a harsh tool that was as deadly as a double-edge blade, being tossed and juggled about.
He was close, the blips of his tracking software slowing down as it got closer to a few steps. Just a little bit further.
Slowly, a rocky structural mass of grey formed out of the wall of fog ahead, shaping up into that of a cavern entrance in a large hill.  Curious, thought Playback. A cave seems counterproductive to a EMP... the lower you go, the harder the signal is to go forth...

He hopped up onto the rocky surface, and stared down into the darkness that laid ahead. He barely managed two steps before he stopped himself, not able to see any distance in front of him. He considered his choices, of either going back and getting assistance, or pressing onward.
Luckily and unluckily, he wouldn't have to make a choice.
"Who are you?", said a dark and low voice from the back of Playback. He spun around quickly, coming face to face to the black cat that stared expressionless at him. The spiral on his chest was powerfully conflicting against the grey fog that surrounded the two.
"... I am Playback. Have you been into this cave?" questioned Playback, standing his ground.
The black cat sat down onto the ground, blinking as he stared at Playback. It brought him unease, the way he studied him without a flicker of emotion in his face. "What are you doing here? You come from the town. This is a far ways away."
"There has been hostile electromagnetic pulses being sent through the air. The source comes from this cave. I need to investigate. Have you been inside?"
His aggressor stood back up, taking a slight step towards him, before shifting back. "It is unsafe in there. It is dark, and without knowing the place you tread in darkness, your tread is better off left for another day."
"I need to go in now. If you haven't been in, then I can't waste any more time talking. I apologize." Playback turned away from him, starting off towards the cave's entrance, starting to go into the darkness. He only gave one glance back, to see the cat staring silently at him with his large eyes.
Stepping forth through the darkness, Playback took careful hops through the cave's rocks, heading down the pathway as the sound of dark water splattered against the walls and the floors, somewhere off in the surrounding darkness. This very water had laid at rest upon the next rock he jumped upon, causing him to slip and tumble foolishly onto the nearest rock. He grunted, slowly getting back up, looking forth to only jolt back, letting out a soft gasp in surprise from the sudden return of the black cat. "You need to leave, now." he spoke, his eyes somehow looking fiercer despite the lack of change in expression from before.
Playback quickly got back up to his feet, angry in the face now. "No, you need you leave. I need to go down now. You are only delaying me."
"....then delay I will. It is not safe. Evil things tread in the darkness of these caves, and without knowing them, they will attack you. Leave now, before you can't."
"I already told you, I am not leaving! If it puts me in danger, then so be it! Without attacking this signal, I am already putting myself in enough danger!" Playback took an aggressive stance, ready to move this civilian from his path if he had to.
The cat stared at the foolish fox, hating what he was about to do, but knowing it had to be done. "I warned you.." he said, voice trailing away as he stood, and leaped.
The fight was on, with the two starting with a tumble. Claws were seen, and paws were swung. Try as he might, Playback struggled against this civvie that opposed him. He kicked him off, only to watch the black cat hop back into the darkness. Searching for him did nothing, as he would hop back in from some unseen ledge, swiping again before rushing back. But yet for all his attacks, no blood was drawn. He knew the cat could have easily done such an act, but for some reason he kept just knocking him around.
And knock him around he did, bouncing him off of the walls to the next piece of rock ground that came as Playback flew to it. Finally, he called out a desperate call, unable to hold himself up for any period of time before being knocked back down. "S-Stop this, you villiouses cat!"
Out of the shadows walked the black and purple one, glaring at Playback. "Will you leave now? I am trying to protect you. You are above the others, and you need to be safe. I may know what is attacking you with the electric messages. I will attack them. You can not put yourself at risk, where I can go safely. I will search for this source, and you can come tomorrow if it continues. If it doesn't... you will see me now, anyways. Just go, upwards towards the right. It is the less slippery path."
His voice was so quick that it left no time for Playback to interrupt or debate. Instead, he just stared back at him, before nodding, and parting back up the way the cat said.
And even as he came back out to the morning light, even as he walked back, even as his entered the palace as the morning guards bid him good morning.. he knew the spiral cat was not an enemy. He bared such a familiarity, it scared Playback. He knew he had seen him before. Is that what he meant by you will see me now? Have I seen him watching before? He can't be a rebel... but then..
    What is he?
    ...
And why does he care for my safety?
****
Spiral sat upon his hill, the opposite direction of the fields. Instead, he gazed at the palace, watching the guards shift to let Playback pass. None of them could distinguish the cat from the shadows of the trees, leaving him to curious watch the life he grew up without. And the strong one, that had the potential to cause a revolution that would even be beyond Spiral's own mind.
With the spirits settled, the blue fox was safe from harm. His technological studies could continue..
...as could Spiral's studies of society.
I always wondered how Spiral would treat Playback..
.. and in doing so, this story formed.

More will most likely follow Playback and Spiral.
ImDefinitelySane owns Playback (Also, read her stories, they're amazing.

Is this going to cause them to get shipped? Damnit.
